Art and Ale 2014 has been a success!

With perfect weather, beautiful works of art from talented artists, Timothy Seaman’s intriguing music as soundtrack for the day, and a steady supply of delicious food and Alewerks award winning brews; the stage was set for something for all visitors to enjoy.

Our artists, the reason to celebrate our festival, filled our clubhouse and grounds with their latest work.

From paintings to pottery, quilts to jewelry and sculpture, we enjoyed the color, texture, form and feeling which art brings to our lives.

We have a strong community of artists in Williamsburg.  And many active in our Williamsburg arts community are also our neighbors, or our former neighbors, here in Kingspoint.  We are happy to have the opportunity to to meet and visit with them, and to view and purchase their current works, right here in our own Kingspoint Clubhouse.

 

Jean Hess has strong ties to our Kingspoint neighborhood.  Her work remains on permanent display in our clubhouse.

 

We also have a strong community of volunteers.  We appreciate the support of so many willing neighbors who helped make this event possible. 

Working together, we created a memorable and successful day. 

“Thank you!” to all of the friends, family, neighbors, and visitors who shared some part of the day with us.

Denis Orton

Raku Pottery

 

Denis Orton, Raku potter, continuously works to perfect his glazes.

 

A retired chemist, Denis has been making his signature one of a kind pots in his home studio in Kingspoint for more than two decades.

The Raku pots are removed red hot from the kiln, and are put on a bed of sawdust and then covered with a steel can for ten minutes.  The smoke and fumes from the sawdust have worked their magic on the still molten glaze.

Denis continues to experiment in pursuit of mastery of this ancient art.

Denis has recently been working with crystalline glazes on porcelain.

Denis formulates his glazes with various metals to create the unusual crystalline formations. The crystals form as the pots slowly cool in the kiln over many hours.

Chain Maille Jewelry

“Links and Lore”

“Offering  fashionable, modern jewelry which captures the historic patterns that have lasted thousands of years.”

Links & Lore Jewelers was created by our Master Maille-Smith, Jason Hillegas, who started weaving maille armor at the age of 14.

Maille armor is the metal mesh medieval knights wore under their shiny plates of armor. 

Throughout the 29 years that followed, Jason not only continued weaving maille, but he also dove into its history; studying its origins, how it was originally made, and teaching himself the dozens of chain maille patterns which  developed over the centuries.

While he was weaving a maille shirt for a friend, a lady approached and commented, “That would make some real pretty jewelry. Have you ever thought of making some?”

Hence the seed that was planted years ago has now grown into Links & Lore Jewelers.

Jason strives to stay true to the belief that each piece of jewelry is a link to the past or, if you will, a link of history.

Every design is a variation of one of the patterns from the maille armor that knights used to wear.   Of course a few patterns that are a bit more modern have found their way into the collection of designs. In those instances,  Jason believes  that they are just too nice of a pattern not to use them.

About Links & Lore Jewelers

There is much more to maille or “chain-mail” than just the pretty patterns you find in a crafting magazine. 

Maille is an art form that is well over 5,000 years old. We’re keeping it alive by taking the patterns that were once only used for weaving armor and turning them into jewelry and accessories for more modern applications.

So you are literally wearing a piece of history.

Barb Hodson is a novice quilter who enjoys using age-old quilting applications.

Her work embodies the beauty and nostalgia of traditional patchwork quilts .

Barb, who has been quilting since 2005, restores antique quilts and creates new quilts of her own design.

Barb appreciates the simplicity of expression found in the process of quilting.

Diana Dellos

 

Acrylic & Mixed Media Paintings

 

“Art, music, and love. It’s what makes the world go ‘round for me.”

 

Diana Dellos, a native of Wyoming, has been a creative soul for as long as she can remember.  Having artists as parents, creativity was a normal part of everyday life.

In high school, she drew many charcoal portraits of children and in college, she filled her electives with art courses.

Her main focus over the last sixteen years has been raising her three children and keeping the family afloat, while moving several times across the country.

Through these years, she was always doing something creative on the side: painting a world map mural in her boys’ bedroom and hibiscus flowers on her daughter’s walls, designing for Spellbinders Paper Arts Co., stenciling stair risers, redecorating their many homes, and lots of colorful painting on canvases.

Jean Hess

Paintings

Art has been a life-long passion for Jean who sold drawings when in high school.

She studied at Sunderland College of Art in her native England.   Then she was an art major at RPI.   Marriage and three children delayed college graduation for 20 years. To make up for lost time, Jean earned a BA in Fine Arts (Painting) and an MEd (French) at W&M.

Since then she has painted regularly, first using oils and watercolors but now acrylic paints. For more than 3 decades she has painted with a group of local artists once led by renowned artist Barclay Sheaks and currently led by Ann Armstrong.

With fresh colors and pleasing compositions, Jean strives to evoke feelings of serenity in the beauty of everyday objects or scenes.

Her works (landscapes, still lifes and figures) have been exhibited in various venues including This Century Art Gallery (4 juried show awards), New Town Art Gallery, Williamsburg Sentara Regional Medical Center, Wmsbg. Landing, Wmsbg. Regional Library, The Trellis Restaurant, Prince George Art & Frame, and James City Co. Gov. Offices.

Her paintings are in the collections of art enthusiasts in several states as well as  in England and France.

Largely self taught, I began my adventure with watercolors in 1997 taking classes with Ann Murphy Armstrong.   After several workshops with numerous nationally known watercolor instructors such as Judy Betts, Gerald Brommer, Steve Rodgers, Betsy Dillard Stroud and Don Andrews, I joined the Barclay Sheaks Art Group.   Now known as the Williamsburg Studio Painters, I find myself working with Ann Armstrong, the group’s leader, once again.

I started my company, A Girl Named Betsy, about 6 years ago and started to sell my pottery.  I have been making pottery for 12 years.

I am an award winning artist in multiple media forms.

I love making pottery and before I make anything I say a short prayer for love and joy to be with me and work through me to create the form.  So my pottery is truly a gift from the universe.

Timothy Seaman

Solo Acoustic Dulcimer and Flutes

Timothy Seaman, musician, songwriter, teacher and naturalist,  has been a Williamsburg resident for more than 40 years.

An internationally known recording artist, he currently has 15 CD recordings in his discography.  He is known for his distinctive, compelling, and passionate instrumental music on hammered dulcimer and flute.

Tim’s music is a unique blend of styles.  He has developed his own techniques with the hammered dulcimer to weave melodies ranging from traditional folk tunes to well loved hymns. His recordings also include numerous original compositions.

Much of Tim’s music has a distinctive Virginia  theme.  He has composed music to express the unique qualities of our many National Parks and to capture the flavor of important periods of our history.

Timothy’s CDs include:  Jamestown: On the Edge of a Vast Continent (2006), Celtic Airs (2010), Virginia Wildlife (2004), Here On This Ridge (1997), and Gentle Breeze Beneath The Trees (2011).  His latest CD, Tenting on the Old Camp Ground (2012) includes 44 tunes from the mid- 1860s which were popular at the time of our War Between the States.

Tim’s CDs feature a number of familiar guest artists, including Ardie Boggs, Bill Gurley, Ann Robinson, and Phillip Skeens.

Timothy will perform throughout the day at our Kingspoint Art and Ale 2014, will offer his CDs for sale, and will be available to demonstrate his hammered dulcimer to interested music lovers.  Many neighbors still have fond memories of Timothy’s previous concert in  our Kingspoint Clubhouse  in February of 2012.

This is a very special opportunity for our community to meet  Timothy and enjoy his  music.  He will perform on the deck, overlooking beautiful College Creek, throughout the day.

Janis Lee Wood

Paintings

Janis has been painting, exhibiting, and selling her works for forty years.  Her mediums are acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media.  She uses bold colors, impasto techniques and texture, and often takes a more impressionistic, or abstract approach when depicting portrait, landscape, and still life subjects.

She has exhibited in numerous art venues all over the country, most recently in Northern VA, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg, and her paintings hang in many private collections.  She loves interior and landscaping design, and will accept commissions to create paintings to suit your personal tastes and color schemes.  She also produces paintings that are water and weatherproofed and meant to be hung outdoors on patios or fences.

Janis worked for the federal government in the Washington, DC for more than twenty years.  Throughout this period, she continued to paint and exhibit in both Washington and Northern Virginia.  In 2002, after retiring from the Federal Government, she moved to Williamsburg, VA, where she continues to paint.   Born in Texas, she has also lived in California, Maine, Maryland, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and has traveled extensively both home and abroad.  This varied background provides her with a wide range of visual experiences that influence her paintings.

Many of Janis’ works are available in limited edition gallery wrapped canvas giclées.  They are hand embellished by the artist, and signed and numbered. She also offers open edition prints of her works on gallery quality paper that are mounted and matted using acid free materials.  She will also custom frame both originals and reproductions at a very reasonable cost in styles and colors to suit your decor.
